What I learned about exercise and weight loss recently.

Hey there,

I just got back from teaching up in Portland this past weekend and I started to talk about a presentation I attended in January about exercise and weight loss.  It sparked so much interest that I decided to write a blog about it and share the resources I have so you can investigate for yourself.

On January 31, 2015, I attended a one day Perform Better conference at the LA Convention Center (for more info about these amazing seminars, visit www.performbetter.com).  I was excited to see the presenters there and learn from them.  I loved them all.  Notably, Todd Durkin is amazing and was super motivating in discussing how he has become so successful and sharing some of his stories about what it takes.  He’s awesome and I really recommend you attending anything he presents, because he’s well spoken, honest and has a wealth of knowledge.

But I really want to focus this blog about another presenter that I saw for the first time, although I’ve heard about him for a while:  Alwyn Cosgrove.  He was amazing, captivating, super well researched, organized and funny.  One of the best presentations I’ve ever attended.  His presentation was on Metabolic Resistance Training and how this type of training blows traditional aerobic fat loss exercise programs out of the water.  He presented study after study after study about the failures of traditional exercise programs in producing fat loss.  It was really astounding to see the number of studies over the years that show the same thing.  The addition of traditional “aerobic exercise” like running or spinning alone does not increase fat loss.  In 400+ studies comparing diet to diet plus aerobic exercise, the addition of aerobic exercise (45-60 minutes of exercise 4-6 times per week at various percentages of max heart rate), had “no effect” over dieting alone.  None!  I was crushed, frustrated, and frankly, pretty angry because every certification program for group fitness instructors and personal trainers tells you to recommend aerobic exercise to clients who wish to lose weight.  Great!  Now what?

For more information and about this amazing guy, Alwyn Cosgrove, who’s changed the way I train, visit his website at www.resultsfitnessuniversity.com.

Well, it turns out that exercise CAN have an effect on weight loss, but not traditional aerobic exercise.  After presenting some great research to support his hypothesis (see references at the end of this post), here is what Mr. Cosgrove shared.
The following is quoted from Alwyn Cosgrove’s lecture and his awesome book (see references at the end of this post):

The Hierarchy of Fat Loss…

  1. Correct Nutrition
  2. See Number 1  (I told you he was funny too – right?)
  3. Activities that burn calories, maintain/promote muscle mass and elevate metabolism
  4. Activities that burn calories but don’t necessarily maintain muscle or elevate metabolism

And drum roll please……….
The Hierarchy of Fat Loss Training (2014)

  1. Metabolic Resistance Training
  2. High Intensity Anaerobic Interval Training (Metabolic Zone Training)
  3. High Intensity Aerobic Interval Training
  4. Low Intensity Aerobic Training
  • If I have only 3-4 hours per week – only use #1
  • If I have 4-6 hours – use #1 and #2
  • If I have 6-8 hours available – add #3
  • If I have more than that available – add #4

**Please keep in mind that these training recommendations are for FAT LOSS!  I’m not talking about any other benefits of aerobic training or strength training or interval training.  This blog is about the most efficient training program for fat loss.

The hypothesis Alwyn puts forth is that due to the post training effects of Metabolic Resistance Training (basically, the Afterburn Effect) the loss of subcutaneous fat is up to 9 times greater than that of an aerobic training program.  That’s huge!  The exact mechanisms are not yet fully understood, but the results are consistent: Combined with a reduced refined carb diet, adding 4 Metabolic Resistance Training sessions per week, can easily result in 1-3 lbs of fat loss per week.

Project John – Day 7

The first week is just about finished for Project John, my quest to be more fit for the launch of JGFIT TV and the IDEA World Fitness Conference – a lot has happened in the first week.

JGFIT TV is now a corporation. We got the documents filed and opened a Bank account and are that much closer to our big launch.

Mike and I went to IHRSA (a Fitness Equipment Trade Show) and purchased some great new equipment for John Garey Fitness & Pilates Studio as well as the JGFIT TV set.  I saw some great friends from the industry, including my good friend Bryce Taylor (creator of the Halo Trainer).

On Saturday, we mainly hung out with the dogs and relaxed.
On Sunday John Garey Fitness & Pilates sponsored the Mustang Run Benefit for Rogers Middle School.  We had a table and our mascots (BamBam and Rocco) were on hand to greet the runners, students and parents.

Project John: Day 2

Well…Day 2 happened – and it was great!!!  I had a really productive day, got 3 great workouts in:

  • Advance Mat and Reformer (1 hour)  – morning
  • Beach Run (45 minutes) – mid-day
  • Lower Body and Core High Intensity workout (30 minutes) – early evening

And because of that I had a calorie deficit of about 650.  I had a clean day of eating really healthy foods.

I also got some great filming in and had some fun with the dogs.  Check out the vlog here:

Project John Begins!

So, I’ve been working on JGFIT TV for quite a while now, and came to a realization yesterday that I want to up my game and look and feel much better.  It was after reviewing some footage for a Connect the Dots episode.   “Yikes!” I said (and maybe a few other words as well).  I have many events and big moments coming up, and I want to look and feel my absolute best!

Anyway, as part of our lead up to the launch of JGFIT TV, I’ve decided to take you behind the scenes, so you can follow along on my journey to get the best body this 53 year old is capable of.  My goal is to lose between 10-15 pounds of fat and gain, at least, 5 pounds of muscle by the IDEA World Fitness Conference which begins July 15.  Not only am I presenting at IDEA World, but we’ll also have a booth to promote the launch of JGFIT TV.  Of course, I’d like to see progress sooner than later, so I’m going to hit it hard starting today –  March 11.

I thought I’d invite you along for the ride.  I’m going to post a video and written blog here on our website.  I’ll post behind the scenes photos (you won’t see anywhere else).  I’ll post my daily workouts as well.   So if you want to do it with me, you can.  I’ll also post what I’m eating on Myfitnesspal every day.  If you friend me, you’ll be able to follow along.  I plan on posting everything – the good, the bad, and the ugly.  I’m also going to post my current stats: body weight, % body fat, and circumference measurements (did I mention I’m not happy with where I am right now – yea – not really looking forward to posting that info).  But, I believe that this may be inspiring to some of you out there and I also know that accountability (to myself and also to you) will help keep me on track as well.

So please follow my blog and I look forward to sharing great results with you and showing you some really fun back stage stuff as we get ready for our HUGE JGFIT TV launch coming in just a couple of months!
